Dr Damon Ashworth

Clinical Psychologist

B.B.Sc, B.Psych (Hons), D.Psych (Clinical)

I work with adolescents and adults with a wide variety of health concerns, including depression, anxiety, stress, fatigue, grief, substance abuse, adjustment difficulties, relationship difficulties, communication difficulties, and sleep problems. One area of my expertise is in treating sleep difficulties.

My doctoral research examined the links between insomnia and depression, with the aim of improving the mood and daytime functioning of individuals by enhancing their sleep quality at night through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). I have presented the promising findings of this research at interstate and overseas conferences, and I apply this knowledge to help clients who seek a greater understanding of their sleep difficulties as well as strategies to improve their sleep.

Apart from expertise in sleep, I have a specific interest in Health Psychology, and have worked with Caulfield Rehabilitation Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in helping people adjust to and cope with serious and chronic physical conditions. I am also interested in trauma-focused Psychology, and have experience in treating trauma based symptoms in war-veterans and other individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I take a client-centred approach to treatment, and aim to reduce distress and improve well-being in clients whilst helping them to achieve their goals.

I practice mostly from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy framework, but also utilise Existential, Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Humanistic, and Positive Psychology principles where clients will benefit from such approaches.
